My wife and I debated getting birth certificates for our kids (both home births), and have decided that we probably should have. One's now 2, and the other just turned 1. Our next is due next month (planning a home birth). We're not expecting any trouble getting a birth certificate for that one, but I'm wondering if anyone else here has any experience and/or advice on getting delayed certificates for the other two?

I know one of our members finally got her littlest one's certificate when she was ready for kindergarten . . . I'll send her over here to weigh in.

My experience---Birth certificates for homebirths are no problem...IF you get them soon after birth!
Actually I don't think you will have any problems getting your one and two year olds either. DON'T wait any longer tho.
I've had 9 homebirths, 8 of them I got BC right away, I DID find that if I waited a couple weeks I didn't have to deal with the hassle of them telling me I had to have some tests done that I didn't want done, but if you are having all the routine stuff done anyway, It doesn't make any difference.

With our last one I didn't get it done, life was busy/crazy, and it just wasn't at the top of my list. A couple months went by, and I tried, and then I had problems because of our "lack of evidence" They require a certain amount of evidence, and we simply did not have enough, and they refused to accept what we did have. After trying (sending stuff in) 3 different times, I simply gave up. However as we all know, you can't send kids to school without one, so when she was 5 I started trying again. Basically with the same results until it came to the attention of someone there in the office who evidently wanted to help, so she called me, sent me papers, walked me through what I needed to do, and was so nice & kind, and it really was not a very big deal.

I do not remember when the cut-off point is for doing the actual type of delayed BC that we had to do. Maybe it was 3 years, maybe it was 5, and we were just past, I'm not sure. I just personally would not wait any longer, I would hate for anyone to go thru what we did!

(And lucky for you all, this is the short version, because a few of you that have heard the whole story can attest to what an ordeal & how upsetting it was for me!)

Thanks, Maxine. I guess we just go in and try then. I'd skip the testing, too, if we could, but I don't think our backup doctor would let us get away with that. Smile

Another interesting thing, the Dr./Hospitals here required me to send/call in to request the birth certificate papers myself. The Dr's I had did sign them after I'd gotten them, but it was up to me to fill them out & send them back in. With our youngest I did not see a Dr. and I had to have one of the gals that was at my birth have an affidavit notarized that she was there.
When my daughter had her homebirth, and took the baby into the clinic to have him checked, they immediately did all the paperwork for her & sent it in right then & no big deal at all!

11 years ago, when my bro was 5 and my sis was 3, my parents finally decided to get their birth certificates. I don't recall exactly how much of a drama it was, but they got it figured out. (both homebirths of course)

i know this won't help much b/c its out of state, but i have a friend who's son was born in chicago and then since have moved a few times, and just recently got his birth certificate. he is 4. so it definatly is possible. if someone treats you bad about it, try back the next day. where are u located at anyway?

We're in Newman Grove, NE now. Our first was born in Saint Edward, though.

i have heard of those towns but have no idea where they are at. So is there an office for Vital Statistics in your town? otherwise where would u have to go to get one? let us know when you get this taken care of and how hard it was for you in case others need to do the same thing. and make sure and get 2 copies in case its hard to get a copy later!!

Smile We're about 40 miles SW of Norfolk, and a little less NW of Columbus. A town of about 850, I believe.

There is no Vital Statistics office here in Newman Grove, but there is one in Norfolk. However, it's also been recommended to us that we work directly with the state office, even for new one.

yes, as far as I know for delayed birth certificates you probably will have to work with the state office in Lincoln. I would just call the office there & request the forms. That's what we did.
